Historical Setting The Mott Haven District of the South Bronx is filled with a noble and troubled history. Since the 1850's there have been waves of industry, upper middle class residences and then poverty and low income housing, due to white flight and the infamous burnings of the South Bronx in the late 60’s and seventies. Today it is an extraordinarily diverse mix of Latino, African-American and most recently African families, accompanying old and new creative industries. This gritty atmosphere has been a magnet for an influx of artists from all over the city in the last 20 years, who inhabit loft buildings in lower Mott Haven, some of which previously housed pianoforte manufacturers.
